If It Was Me
This is a personal story that touches upon us all, of one artist who hopes that his art would bond. His family and the society that surrounds him.
In ‘If It Was Me’, this stirring and staggering documentary, the sad, yet inspirational story of the van Gelder family, is the red thread of an art installation that takes its visitors on a whirlwind of emotions, as those stories unfold.
The installation ‘Between You and Me: Memory Boxes’ by artist Amos van Gelder, composer Amit Gur and curator Birgitta van Blitterswijk, opened at the Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam, in March 2025.
Amos van Gelder weaves his private story and our common history through portrays of twenty individuals. Almost every aspect of the Holocaust finds its way into this family’s history: hiding, deportation, betrayal, murder, resistance, Jew hunters, collaboration, Jewish Council, and survival.
The documentary “If It Was Me” delves into the artist’s life of discord. A Dutch man born in Israel to Dutch holocaust survivors; traveling the world to study art and finally settling in the Netherlands; experiencing struggles of survival – physical and emotional - all these years; the constant world turmoil influences his life and work, as he carries a deep-felt connection to Jewish culture, language, and the fate of the Jewish people.
In the documentary the question that is raised is – What would you have done, if it was you?
This documentary dares to prod ‘holy cows,’ and forces the viewers to re-examine their notions on victims and predators of WWII; the place of Art in our world, its power or impotence to make a difference.

It is a beautiful truthful documentary. From beginning to the end I was into the story.
The close ups of the faces (the mother!) are very powerful. Vulnerability without words to distract.
I was amazed by the scene in Vondelpark, you talking with Amos.
From different angles images, as if there was a whole camera team with several cameras.
I know it was just Michael who took all... So magic how he as cameraman and you as editor succeeded to let Amos talk fluently and have different shots to make it lively!
We waren onder de indruk van de film en het raakte mij (weer) zo erg wat al die mensen moeten hebben doorstaan.
Jullie hebben er veel werk van gemaakt, het is een kunstwerk geworden.
Wel ontzettend pech dat jullie door Gaza nu een minder eerlijke kans krijgen om jullie veehaal te vertellen, mensen kunnen vaak maar ééndimensionaal denken.
Jullie kunnen trots zijn oo dit werk, een document voor de toekomst.
Een bijzonder waardevol document
Een prachtige documentaire die op een heel persoonlijke wijze de artistieke reis verteld van de portrettering van een bijzondere familie. In deze familie komen veel elementen van de Nederlandse holocaust terug. Met in deze documentaire aandacht voor hoe hereniging tussen moeder en dochter ook heel erg pijnlijk kon zijn. Deze documentaire zit op de huid, is rauw, mooi en oordeelloos. En geeft je daardoor iets wezenlijks om over na te denken.
